about

DIRECTED BY AMANDA MICHELI
OFFICIAL SELECTION OF THE 2016 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL

HAVEABABY is a documentary film that follows a controversial video contest sponsored by a Las vegas in vitro fertilization clinic. For millions of Americans, IVF may be their last resort to start a family, but for those without thousands of dollars to gamble on the unpredictable procedure, this social media experiment could be their only hope. With intimate access to diverse characters on an excruciating roller coaster, the film examines the reproductive choice to have a baby and explores how we cope with desire and loss.

Despite affecting over 10 million people in the U.S. and millions more worldwide, infertility is a topic that is often swept under the rug and clouded by judgment and stereotypes. Because reproductive medicine is dominated by for-profit clinics reliant on marketing rather than insurance contracts, patients are often left feeling particularly vulnerable and alone.

As IVF evolves from a rare petri-dish experiment to a household word, our beliefs about family planning, reproductive justice and “choice” are evolving with it. HAVEABABY will be a dramatic journey exploring a timely issue that affects someone in your family, your neighborhood, or your workplace, whether you know it or not.
